Abstract

A base for cosmetic formulations consists of the product obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of the fraction of b. pt. 155-240 degrees C/1 torr. obtd. by thermal degradation of synthetic polyisoprene rubber under reduced pressure. Provides a convenient substitute for squalane which is not available in sufficient quantity and which can only be made synthetically in low yields. A suitable polyisoprene is of formula -(-CH2-C(CH3)=CH-CH2)n- (where n is ca. 220,000) having a cis-1,4-content of 92-97%.
