Abstract

Adhesive compsns. which readily adhere to surfaces on application of very little or no pressure contain a non-adhesive rubber and a phenoplast adhesive consisting of: (I) pheno-diene-phenol adduct having mol.wt. >=400, prepd. by reacting 1 mol non-conjugated diene with 2 mole phenolic cpd. having only one ring-C capable of alkylation; (II) poly-(phenol-diene)-resin, having alternating diene and phenol units, vitreous transition temp. 100-220 degrees C, no.av.mol. wt. 600-5000, prepd. by reacting 1 mol non-conjugated diene with 1.75 mol phenolic cpd. having >=2 ring-C capable of alkylation; (III) phenol-diene-olefine resin having no.av. mol. wt. 600-6000 and prepd. by first reacting 2 mol phenol with 1 mol non-conjugated diene and reacting prod. with 1-4 mol olefin; and (IV) terpene-phenolic resin having av.no.mol.wt. 400-3500, and prepd. by reacting 2-4 mol terpene with 1 mol cpd. contg. >=2 phenolic gps., each of which has at least 1 free ortho- or para-position for alkylation by terpene. Reactions are carried out in an inert atmos. in presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, at 20-130 degrees C. Compsns. are useful as pressure-sensitive adhesives applied to articles having several surfaces requiring bonding; adhesive strips; non-slip safety sheets for floors, stairs and/or bathroom floors or bath-tubs.
