Abstract

Scintillator responding to penetrating radiation, e.g. X- or gamma- radiation, consists of Tl-doped alkali halide material, esp. Nal, contg. 25 to 200, pref. an average of 50 ppm Tl by wt. Used in a (directional) radiation detector in conjuction with a photoelectric converter and means of measuring the detector output in consecutive time intervals. The use of only a limited amt. of Tl reduces the phosphorescence considerably, whilst a satisfactory degree of efficiency for the light conversion process is retained.
