Abstract

There are normal ring magnets on the ends of the rotor but, in addition, there is a permanent magnet ring with radial magnetic field opposing the stator winding. This generates an axial force on the rotor. On the stator there is at least one sensor measuring the axial position of the rotor. A regulator varies the current in the windings, depending on the sensor. This keeps the rotor stable. The magnet rings on the rotor are made from ferromagnetic material. By using a series of ring magnets it is possible to provide progressive radial and axial stabilisation. The outer face of the rotor and the inner surface of the stator are coated with a thin smooth layer of non magnetic high conductance material.
