Abstract

Building block (e.g. of clay, concrete etc.), substantially water tight suitable for use in the "full wall thickness" process, comprises a regular compsn. and a narrow zone extending across it which has been impregnated with a water repellant. In particular, the block comprises a double hollow centre with 4 outer walls and a central bridge, the region which is impregnated being a control region in the central bridge and the two outer walls parallel to it. The block is moisture proofed between the outer and inner walls of the cavity wall while leaving sufficient of the upper and lower surfaces untouched by the water repellant, so that when mortar is applied to the surfaces, the water will penetrate the block sufficiently to provide a strong bond, while when the mortar joint has dried out, the waterproofed regions provide adequate moisture protection without being subject to degradation from ultra violet radiation or direct weathering.
