Abstract

Simultaneous decolouration and removal of undesired organic acids from plant oils is effected by contacting the oils with granular active C impregnated with 1-15% NaOH, or KOH. After use, the active C layer is pref. rinsed with an inert gas or liquid and C is reactivated. In a pref. process soybean oil is bleached and purified from free fatty acids by passing through a layer of granular active C impregnated with NaOH or KOH, removing excess oil from layer, reactivating C and re-impregnating it with NaOH or KOH before renewed use.
