Abstract

Measurement of hydrocarbon in gases may be made in the range from less than 1 ppm to explosive concentrations or even higher if diluent gas is used. Flow of hydrocarbon containing gas is measured by pressure drop across a capillary restriction and then burnt in a hydrocarbon-oxygen flame causing ionisation. The ionisation current is measured under constant potential and is proportional to the flow of hydrocarbon, hence the hydrocarbon content of the gas can be measured. Determination of hydrocarbons in gaseous mixtures e.g. polluted atmospheres, stack emissions, explosive atmospheres or for determination of unburn fuel in exhaust gases from petrol or diesel engines.
