Abstract

To ensure the sealing of shafts or other rotating parts in presurized or vacuum containers, particularly during pumping operations, the mechanical packing is done by a retractable, hollow, toroidal shape pneumatic seal made of flexible material, lodged inside an annular groove in a fixed support. The packing, pressurized during pumping operations and pressing the fixed and rotating surfaces together, is, after pressurization or vacuum is achieved, deflected to free the moving part of the mechanical packing. The transverse axis of the pneumatic packing is in the same transverse plane as that defined by the contact surface of fixed and moving surfaces.
