Abstract

The self-pumping, hydropneumatic strut has two chambers containing hydraulic fluid and gas. A pumping facility is formed between the sprung and unsprung parts of the damper to connect a first chamber to a suction valve and the second chamber to an outlet valve. A control piston monitors the relative displacement of both parts and controls the pump and/or venting action, with both chambers connected when the set level has been reached on the suspension. The connection is progressively established so that a smooth operation is obtained, especially when the suspension oscillates about its set point.
