Abstract

Liquefied natural gas is oderised by addition of an odorant dissolved in a solvent. The oderant pref. has a f.pt. > b.pt. of the gas, and the solvent has a f.pt. b.pt. of the gas. The oderant is pref. ethyl and/or methyl mercaptan and is dissolved in liquid propane at =15 vol.% or in methane gas under pressure. Solidification of the odorant and slow soln. in the liquid gas at low temps. are avoided. Solns. of ethyl mercaptan in propane show no solidifcn. at -161 degrees C (a typical b.pt for natural gas) at 5.7 mole %.
