Abstract

A method of identifying and determining the contribution of a source of atmospheric pollution makes use of the fact that the gases in a smoke stream undergo the same diffusion i.e. the ratio of the concentration of a tracer to that of the pollutant remain constant over the length of the stream emitted from the source. Method consists of taking, over a known period, a sample of air contg. pollutant and a suitable tracer, sepg. by fixing the pollutant and analysing, on the same sample of air, for pollutant and tracer, the pollutant being trapped in one part of the apparatus and the tracer recovered in another part, and determining the degree of pollution of the air coming from the source and by difference the quantity of pollutants coming from other unidentified sources. The tracer can be gaseous, e.g. halogenated compounds, freons, radio-active gases, sulphur hexafluoride, particulate radio-active solid compounds absent from the atmosphere. Separation may be carried out by absorption, adsorption or condensation means. The apparatus is simple, portable and self-contained. The pump, batteries and contactor are all in a box making it possible for use in any atmosphere. It can be used for sampling gases in general, corrosive or not; urban atmospheres, chimney smokes. Hot gas can be cooled before pumping by circulation in a cooled stainless steel tube. The apparatus can be pressurised for use in explosive or corrosive atmosphere. Sampling can be carried out over a sufficiently long period to take account of meteorological conditions. It allows sepn. and selective concn. of any cpd., partic. cpds. reactive at the moment of sampling, and analysis of different pollutants e.g. by putting a trap between the pump and over the absorber.
