Abstract

Supersaturated soln. of chemical to be crystallised is agitated sufficiently to ensure homogeneity, thereby promoting perfect crystal morphology, without producing excessive velocity past the crystal which could affect the crystal form. The agitators used form rising currents of small cross-sectional area in locations away from the growing crystal; the resulting downflow occurs across the rest of the cross-sectional area of containing vessel and is of low velocity. A pref. configuration is of three rising currents forming, in plan, the points of an equilateral triangle with the crystal at the point of intersection of the three axes of symmetry. An alternative configuration is of several rising currents forming, in plan, the centre and points of a regular polygon with several crystals each on an axis of symmetry of the equilateral triangles constituting the polygon. Agitators need only be immersed superficially in the fluid, and regular disposition of the agitators permits homogenisation of large free columns of fluid.
