Abstract

The polymers are broken down by exposure to UV or sunlight in presence of oxygen, after impregnating with a halogenated carbonyl cpd. (A) as oxidation accelerator. (A) is used in an amt. of 0.1-20 wt.% and pref. consists of halogenated acetone, acetyl acetone, biacetyl, methyl vinyl ketone, acetaldehyde, acrolein, cyclohexanone, phenyl acetone benzophenone, or of an opt. halogenated acetyl halide. Impregnation is pref. carried out with a soln. of (A) in org. solvent, and polymers not contng. chlorine are pref. mixed with 5-50 pts. chlorine-contng. polymer before impregnation. The polymer waste is broken down into a form suitable for tipping, without use of any mechanical equipment or burning, and without causing secondary pollution.
