Abstract

The device consists of two rows of balls, each ball in contact with the two adjacent balls in the other row and with one wall of the space in which the balls are arranged. An external force applied to one ball is transmitted via the balls to the space walls. The force applied by each ball to the surface is a factor of the externally applied force and the angular relationship between the walls and the centres of the balls. The device can be used in several ways, for example to lock a shaft centrally in its guide, or to distribute a vertical force evenly over a surface. Rollers can be used instead of balls, and the balls or rollers can be built into a cage, care being taken not to interfere with the transmission of forces.
