Abstract
The wooden railway sleeper has a tapered hole drilled in it. The taper is broader at the base than at the top. The insert is also broader at the base than at the top and along its length there are slots which are V shaped and widen towards the base of the insert. The width of the slots at their widest part is equal to a quarter of the difference between the diameters of the top and bottom of the inserts. The slots are four in number. After the insert has been placed in the hole in the sleeper the holding down bolt is inserted.
