Abstract

Nitro-halo-aromatic cpds. are prepd. by treating a halo-aromatic cpd. with a nitrating agent in the presence of a P cpd. The haloaromatic cpd. is pref. a monohalobenzene, e.g. monochlorobenzene or the corresp. Br, I or F derivs., halonaphthalenes, e.g. Cl-, Br- or I-naphthalenes, dihalo-benzenes, e.g. di Cl- di Br-, Cl Br-, di F- benzenes. Suitable P cpds. are phosphoric and phosphorus acids and phosphoric esters, being added to produce an ortho-orientation effect. The halo-cpd. is pref. treated with conc. HNO3 at 0-130 degrees C in the presence of phosphoric acid opt. with H2SO4, esp. at 50-125 degrees C. Other suitable nitration agents are NO, N2O4 and ethyl nitrate. Prods. are valuable inters in prodn. of dyes, photographic developers and antioxidants and stabilisers for rubber. Improved yields are obtd. with controlled distribution of ortho:para ratio.
