Abstract
In the optimal regulation of an acetylene hydrogenation reactor to improve the yield of the desired ethylene, the redn. takes place in a series of reactors, where a charge contg. a temp. controllable mixt. of acetylene, ethylene, ethane and H2 in adjustable proportions is circulated over a catalyst, having a preliminary experimental phase in which the concns. of acetylene, H2 and CO2 in the charge are independently varied so that the temp. of the gas entering the reactor is adjusted, the molar concns. at the reactor exit of H2, C2H2, C2H6, and 'green oil' are measured and with the aid of these results the order of reaction kinetic coeff. and chemical activities of the hydrogenation reactions in the reactor are detd.; the value of the coeffs. are introduced into the formula for opt. yield from the reactor; after this preliminary phase, during function of the reactor, the entry concns. of CO, ethylene and acetylene in the charge are measured and these values, together with the length of service of the catalyst since its last regeneration, are introduced into the formula; H2 concn. and entry temp. of the reactor are calculated and converted to an electrical command signal; and the H2 concn. and temp. of charge are adjusted by mechanical means responsive to the electrical signals. The catalyst pref. contains Pt and Pd on an alumina support. The concn. of the components of the gas is pref. measured rapidly by chromatography, mass spectrometry or selective light absorption.
