Abstract

A varnish compsn. for application by the contact UV process comprising >1 unsatd. polyester(s) and opt. styrene, is improved by the presence of long chain acrylic ester(s). The latter is pref. ethyl-2-hexyl-and/or butyl acrylate. The compsn. may be used as a rapid setting primer coating on which another coating of UV photopolymerisable compsn. is applied. The compsn. may also be used as the finishing coating. The acrylate ester acts as a plasticiser and imparts low temp (e.g. -20 degrees C) crack resistance to the coating during operations such as sawing, nailing, cutting etc. The compsn. has good polishing props. and shine.
