Abstract
An analogue computation method permits measurements of the sine and cosine of the instantaneous phase angle between two electrical signals which need not be sinusoidal or periodic. The mathematical treatment is based on Fresnel's theory of phase in which two envelope signals E1 and E2 are derived, multiplied together and introduced later in the circuit to give the desired result. The input signals are applied to a quadrature filter 3, 4. Each filter gives two outputs x1, y1 and x2, y2. Each is squared 9, 10, 13, 14 applied to adding units 17, 18 and square-rooted 21, 23. Thus the envelope signals are the algebraic resultant respectively of x1, y1 and x2, y2 and would for sine waves be the instantaneous amplitude of the input.
