Abstract

The perforated material e.g. punched card is placed vertically in front of a C.R.T. screen and held in position by pegs. The screen is in a box containing a photocell which feeds a read-amplifier outside the box. The C.R.T. spot scans vertically or horizontally and when its position on the screen corresp. to the position of a hole in the card, light falls on the photocell and the resulting current is amplified by the read-amplifier. Each position of the spot correspond to one stage of a resistor connected to the read-amplifier. The register contains the information from one card row or column.
