Abstract

A semipermeable foil, e.g. cellophan or gelatin, is impregnated with an electrolyte yielding O2 on electrolysis and opt. contg. aggressive anions, and tightly squeezed between the object under test as an anode and an inert cathode. A p.d. sufficient to decompose water, is applied (normally 6 V). The foil in tight contact with the examined surface delays the formation of molecules from the O2 atoms, and the escape of bubles, whereby the corrosive action is much intensified; it is opt. further promoted by the presence of aggressive anions. The degree of corrosion is assessed either by direct examination of the corroded surface (pref. photoelectric) or by photoelectrically measuring the reduction of the transparency of the foil, or by chemically examining the corrosion prods., e.g. with use of colour indicator. The damaging of the protective coating can be assessed by contacting the examined surface with a cellophan plate impregnated with chemicals undergoing a colour reaction with the metal substrate. Corrosion test may take a varied time but the optimum time for stainless steel and aluminium is 3 hrs.
