Abstract
Filter contains a photochromic substance (A) carrying a conjugated polynuclear aromatic ring system having a series of metastable electronic energy levels (I) such that (a) the transitions from these to higher states are very favourable, and whose photons in the visible range of energies, (b) the levels I are populated so as to give a redistribution of electrons such that the electronic configuration of the fundamental state is transformed to that of the metastable state when the molecule is excited by 300-400 nm. photons, (c) the molecules in the metastable state do not complete strongly for the solar U.V. rays.
