Abstract

A paper web from which excess fluid is to be removed passes through a first nip between two primary rollers of different diameters and around each of which a separate felt passes, and second nip between the larger primary roller and a smooth cylinder of greater diameter than the larger primary roller, the cylinder having a doctor roller and the angle between the first and second nips being 90-150 degrees. The web then passes through a third nip between an intermediate roll (around which a felt passes) and the cylinder, and a fourth nip between a pref. smooth final roller and the cylinder, the angles between the second and third nips and between the third and fourth nips being 70-160 degrees. Efficient removal of the excess fluid can be achieved with the web moving at high speeds.
