Abstract

The novel polymers (I) are prepd by condensing (A) a mixt of oligoeters (II), (II") and (II"') of formula X=Ar-CO2-R1-O- CO-Ar'-CO2-R1-O- n -CO-AR=X' (II) (where in (II') X and X' are -CO-O-CO, in (II") X is -CO-O-CO and X' in (CO2H)2 and in (II"') X and X' are (CO2H)2; Ar is a trivalent and Ar' a divalent (hetero) aromatic gp.; R1 is a divalent satd. aliphatic or-alicyclic, aliphatic-alicyclic or aromatic-aliphatic gp. or (-R-O)n-R; R is a satd aliphatic gp.; p is an integer; n is 1-10), (B) polyamines mainly of formula Ar1(NH2)2 (where Ar, is a homocyclic divalent aromatic gp.) and (C) a polyol mixt. in which 50-100% of OH gps are from cpds with >=3OH gps. and 0.50% from diols. The amts. of (B) and (C) are sufficient to convert anhydride gpgs. of (A) into 5-membered cyclic imide gps. and the CO2H gps into ester and opt amide gps (I) are cheap and sol. in normal enamel solvents and give coatings with good mechanical, thermal, electrical and chemical props.
