Abstract

Pharmaceutical use of hydroxymethylacrylic acid (I) alone or in combination with malic, succinic and citric acids is new. When used alone (I) is a diuretic and chloretic; when used with the other three acids, (I) is a diuretic and amphocholetic. (I) in prepared by the method given in GB 1208403 (J. Org. Chem. 28, 2935,1963) by the reaction of nickel carbonyl on propargyl alcohol in ethanol and acetic acid. The reaction mixture is acidified with HCl, extracted with ether, evaporated and distilled. LD50 of (I) is 700 mg/kg. (i.v. mice). For the acid mixture, the LD50 is 630 mg/kg. (i.v. mice) i.e. 90 mg. (I) + 180 mg. of each of the other acids.
