Abstract

The substitute is prepd. by (a) hydrogenating a liq. fossil fuel with an H2-contg. gas in the presence of circulating solids in a 1st reaction zone to produce a gas of high CH4 content and a carbonaceous residue; (b) contacting the residue and circulating solids with an O2-contg. gas in a 2nd zone to produce an H2-rich gas for recycle to stage (a); (d) recycling at least part of the circulating solids from the 2nd zone to the 1st; and (e) passing the residue formed during hydrogenation from the 1st zone to the 2nd together with the circulating solids. Low-grade oils or combinations with solids fossil fuels (e.g. bituminous coal, carbonisation products. lignite and bituminous schists) can be used as feedstock. The use of catalysts in the gasification zone is avoided. H2 for methanation is supplied by stage (c). Carbon utilisation is high.
