Abstract
The 0.1 sec. duration extremely steep rear flank induction heating energy pulses for extremely fine grain surface harding layers on steel as in parent patent are produced by a high frequency generator with an operating frequency of pref. 27.12 MGz with a tuned circuit with a circuit Q above 100, which is pref. a large volume cavity resonator, which is fed by an oscillator valve with a comparatively small internal resistance, pref. 1000 ohms. This valve is fed with pulses having steep ascent and spontaneous descent characteristics, the duration for the latter being pref. shorter than 1% of the total effective pulse duration. The coil employed comprises a low ohm inductive coupling loop inductor, which is fed into the interior of the high quality cavity resonator(s). The method is fast and imparts very high surface hardness.
