Abstract

Isopentane is prepd. by hydroisomerisation of piperylene or a piperylene/n-pentane mixt. in the presence of hydrogen and a zeolite catalyst, pref. zeolite type Y, granulated with a binder e.g. alumina contg. Ca, Mg, La, Pr or Nd cations, and metallic Pd, Pt or Ni. Pref. the sodium cation exchange capacity of the zeolite is 60-97 equiv. per cent. Reaction conditions are generally 300-350 degrees C and 20-40 atmos. press.
