Abstract

Welding element involves use of an electrical resistance heating element laid in a coplanar undulating or sinusoidal pattern normal to the overall plane of the element. May be used as flat or 'U' or 'V' section elements to be permanently trapped in or acorss the plane of the weld formed of alternatively as elements mounted in a tool, pref. in a sheath with a fluoropolymer cover or coating and mounted in a metal tool via a heat resistant silicone rubber mounting with sufficient flexibility to allow the heating strip to follow variations in the thickness of the weld material. Thermal expansion of the element occurs by loops stretching normal to the overall length of the elements. Esp. advantageous for making annular or other enclosed welding patterns of critical size. The sinusoidal element can strengthen a lapped joint against shear. The element is readily bent in either plane normal to the undulations.
