Abstract

Bipolar element in the form of a caisson, i.e. flat container of height 1/10th of its dia. or its base diagonal if rectangular, which can be stacked to form a multiple-horizontal diaphragm cell partic. for electrolysis of aq. alkali halide solns., comprises upper and lower perforated metal surfaces connected together in conducting manner and forming in use the active surfaces of electrodes of opposite polarity, together with a rigid sealed frame forming the lateral walls, supporting the perforated metal surfaces and containing the electrolyte, as well as a sealing partition between the perforated surfaces with its periphery hermetically sealed to the frame, separating the bipolar element into two superimposed compartments, each provided with devices for feeding and withdrawing electrolyte and more esp. with device for removing gas formed during electrolysis.
