Abstract

Electrode for electrochemical cells of the metal-O2 (air)-type for fuel elements consists of a conductive porous catalystic layer and a conductive porous hydrophobic gas-inlet layer, which are pressed onto a metal mesh, which discharges the current leak and gives the electrode mechanical strength. The catalytic layer consists of penetrating porous hydrophilic zones, with catalytic activity for the electrochemical redn. of O2, and strongly hydrophobic, porous zones, consisting of hydrophobised, conductive, non-porous grains, O2 enters through these zones, the dimensions of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic zones increasing and decreasing respectively in the direction towards the electrolyte in the entire catalytic layer.
