Abstract

Foam materials are produced by (a) mixing styrene or another anionically polymerisable mono- or divinyl aromatic monomer in the mass, or in the presence of a solvent having low b.pt. and no H-acidity, in the absence of oxygen and water, with an anionic catalyst, (b) rapidly polymerising the monomer, and (c) evapg. the solvent and/or excess monomer by the polymsn. heat, so that the polymer is converted into foam. Pref. the monomer has formula (I): (where R is H, vinyl, alpha-methylvinyl or alkyl; and R', R2 and R3 are each H or alkyl).
