Abstract

The polybutylene terephthalate sheet or film used has a relative viscosity of at least 2.0 (pref. at least 2.4) measured on 1% soln. in equal parts by wt. of phenol and tetrachlorethane at 25 degrees C. A cryst. opaque sheet of thickness 0.55 mm. min. or a cryst. transparent film may be used. Thermoforming is by usual vacuum- and/or pressure-assisted methods, with pre-heated material being formed into a cold mould. The process is suitable for making deep-drawn articles for packaging, boxes, covers and containers. Use of polyesters with high mol. wt. gives better physical properties, esp. strength e.g. resistance to breaking by brittleness.
