Abstract

Terephthalic acid, of fibre quality, is obtained by oxidising p-xylene, by O2 in the presence of a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid, pref. acetic, as solvent, and a catalyst contng. a heavy metal, pref. Co and Mn with Br; the reaction is effected by feeding the p-xylene into the reaction vessel at is not 3, pref. 4-10, entry points situated in a vertical plane, and stirring the reaction mixture vigorously. The reaction is at 80 degrees -230 degrees C., pref. 130 degrees-200 degrees C. at a pressure sufficient to keep the p-xylene and solvent liquid.
