Abstract

Galvanised steel sheet coated with phenolic foam anchored via a binder coating based on a mixt. of elastomers and resins, pref. phenolic. Pref. the binder is made by blending the elastomer(s) with metal oxides and an antioxidant dissolving this mix. together with phenolic resins, vinyl copolymers and Zn tetra oxy-chromate in a mixt. of solvents, spreading the soln. over the galvanised sheet, and allowing crystallisation. A mould is lined with pairs of adhesive coated plates between which a phenolic foam is then generated. The product may be used as a sandwich or divided down the middle of the foam. The other face of the steel may be smooth or otherwise decorated or also covered with phenolic foam. The binder allows phenolic foam to provide a core which is cheaper, less flammable and less readily oxidised than a layer of polyurethane foam.
