Abstract

The coating compsns. contain a material (A) which functions both as a dispersing and a wetting agent. Pref. material is the sodium salt of polydisulpho-dinaphthyl methane. The compsns. pref. consist of 100 pts. pigment at least part being kaolin, 0.5-5 pts. PVA with hydrolysis grade >=98% and viscosity of 3-30 cP in 4% soln. at 25 degrees C. 5-18 parts synthetic polymer, 0.3-1.5 pts. crosslinking agent, 0.01-0.6 pts. non-wetting dispersing agent 0.1-1.5 pts (A) and opt. 0.1-0.6 pts. optical brightener. Solids content is pref. 45-62 wt.%. They are suitable for coating paper and card, esp by the two-coat process in which the second coat is applied by a doctor blade. Addition of (A) prevents re-agglomeration of kaolin particles under the blade, causing furrows and scratches in the coated surface.
