Abstract

and/or 1,8-dimethoxyanthraquinones (I) are produced by heating 1,5- and/or 1,8-dinitroanthraquinones (II) with KOH in MeOH. (I) are inters in the mfr. of dyes e.g. nitration, saponification, redn. and bromination gives blue polyester dyes. The method gives (I) in good yields and relatively high purity. PRef. 1 pt. (II) is heated with 3-10 (4-5) pts. MeOH and 0.4-1.0 (0.4-0.6) pt. KOH at 50-150 degrees C.
