Abstract
A combination of a plasticization of extrusion screw turning within a relatively stationary barrel and discharging via a non-return valve to an extension of the barrel. The screw/barrel/barrel extension can be reciprocated as a single unit so that the traverse of the extension chamber along a piston will evacuate material via a passage through the piston. Pref. the unit extrudes vertically downwards. the passage through the piston may lead in line to a mould cavity or may be part of a swan neck for distributing melt shots radially to several moulds disposed around the base of the unit. Pref. the non-return valve at the screw tip comprises a tubular seal with dialent ends mounted in a trapezoidal section ring of flexible, heat resistant material, pref. PTFE, deformable in opposing directions by the relative extrusion and injection pressures. Suitable for plasticization and transfer moulding of plastics or rubbers. The in line arrangement and proximity of the extrusion and transfer barrels results in negligible stagnant zones. Valve design said to generate less pressure distrubance than conventional floating torpedo valves.
