Abstract

The fibre-forming polyester (A) contains a uniformly dispersed polymer (B) with units of formula : -(OR)n-O-CO-R1-CO- (in which R is 2-4C alkylene; R1 is alkylene, arylene or substd. arylene; n is 6-136) and with mol.wt. 3000-30,000. The ether oxygen content of (B) is pref. 19-36%, R is 2 or 3C and the amt. of (B) is 2-15 (5-10) wt.% of total polymer. (B) is pref. based on terephthalic, isophthalic, adipic, azelaic or sulpho-isophthalic acids. (A) and (B) are mixed before melt spinning into fibres, and the time of contact in the molten state is kept short (pref. 20 mins. max.) so that virtually no chemical reaction occurs between (A) and (B), and (B) appears as a disperse phase in the fibre, pref. as fibrils of =5 mu dia. The fibres produced are antistatic and do not lose this property by usual textile processing treatments or by washing.
