Abstract

Definite quantities of chemical cpds., as liquids, gases or solids, are contacted with synchronous or desynchronous liquid cultures of unicellular green algae, esp. Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and their cell growth and/or reproduction rate is measured and compared to that of untreated control cultures under same growth conditions. Data are useful for selection of biochemically active materials, esp. herbicides; but also insecticides, acaricides, fungicides, pharmaceuticals, ferments. Physical or physico-chemical measurements may be made, esp. electronic particle count, spectral colourimetry or nephelometry. Growth conditions are controlled by parameters nutrient soln., temp., gas supply strength and time of illumination.
