Abstract
Reactor control rod positional indication by means of ultra-sonic impulses applicable to water cooled reactors. The probe and receiver element are mounted externally on the bottom of the reactor vessel and the sonic impulse aligned co-incidentally with the control rod guide tube. The signal is reflected from the piston actuator of the control rod and the response time is evaluated to determine the control rod position. The probe mounting is variable and can be on machined flats on the vessel or a through stud seal welded to the vessel. The interface connection between probe and stud must be temperature compensated to ensure long term reliability. Multiple probe and control rod installations incorporating a selector switch are possible.
