Abstract

A method of coating bottles, esp. glass bottles, with plastic, to a height less than the bottle height operates by first heating the bottle, then introducing it into a fluidised bed of plastic particles with an unstable top level and then heating the bottle again to melt the particles and form the coating. The bottles are immersed in the fluidised bed with the upper level of the intended plastic coating completely submerged in the bed, after the portion of the bottle above this level has been masked. Prefd. coating materials are PVC, optionally with stabilising agent, plasticiser and suspension agent or polyethylene. Pref. the bottle neck is partly masked by a sleeve which slides downwards under gravity over the bottle neck while the bottle is held in the fluidised bed at the lower end of a rod; the bottle is however passed through both furnaces in the upturned position, so that the sleeve slides clear of the bottle neck and leaves it fully exposed to the heat; the sleeve remains outside the furnace, relatively cool.
