Abstract

Colourless pyromellitic acid is obtained by (a) adding 0.1-5% wt. based on acid, or activated charcoal to a hot 20-40%wt. aqs. soln. of pyromellitic acid, (b) filtering the soln., and (c) crystallising the colourless pyromellitic acid from the soln. Prod. is esp. suitable for prepn. of plasticisers for PVC, and of pyromellitic dianhydride useful as raw material for resin prodn.
