Abstract

The total surface area of the number of photographic plates (used e.g. in radiology) introduced into a fixing bath is calculated, pref. by detecting the length of the plates, and after fixing the bath in electrolysed. If the total calculated surface is greater than a predetermined value electrolysis taken place during a first stage at a fixed current intensity for a fixed time period and a second stage during which the current intensity is dependent on the difference between the calculated and pre-determined surface areas. The apparatus pref. includes a switch which is activated by the plates as they are introduced into the fixing bath, and which controls a motor to intermittently rotate a cam to operate a series of switches which control, via a variable resistor, the electrolysing current. The device has low power requirements.
