Abstract

Phenoxazine compounds of formula (I):- (where R is an opt. substd. hydrocarbon, X is H, OH or NR1R2, Y is OH or NR3R4, R1-4 are H or opt. substd. hydrocarbons, and rings A and B can opt. carry further substits., may be prepared by reacting a leuco compound (where CO-R of I is replaced by H) with an acylating agent, pref. R-CO-Cl. Products are colourless colour-forming cpds. suitable for use in clean-handling copying systems in which (I) is transferred to a second sheet of paper the surface of which carries an active mineral which causes the hydrolysis of (I) to the leuco compound (II) which in turn is oxidized to give a coloured image.
