Abstract

The fuel element consisting of a fissile material in a steel alloy sheath, contains 1-1000 ppm B in the alloy as grain boundary strengthening constituent B counteracts the destruction of the sheath material by fast neutrons. Natural B is usually suitable, but it is prefd. to use a lower B10 content (18.8%) esp. at higher B contents to minimise thermal neutron capture. The use of N and/or C, to form B nitrides, carbides or carbonitrides, gives further increase in the grain boundary strength.
