Ethylene is polymerised with a 3-10C alpha-olefin in an org. diluent in which the monomers and a considerable fraction of the formed polymer are soluble under the reaction conditions, in the presence of a transition metal compsn. obtd. by reacting a transition metal complex of formula (I) RmMXp (I) (where M is a gp IVA-VIA transition metal; R is opt. substd. hydrocarbyl; X is a monovalent ligand; m is a value from 2 to the higest valence of M; and p is a value from 0,1 or 2 below the valence of M). with an inert support having a hydroxylated surface.Gives amorphous vulcanisable elastomers with a uniform mol. wt. and structure
