Abstract

Method of preparing an elongated body of glass whose core is formed of filiform crystals oriented parallel to the axis, the fibre being 0.001-1 mm. dia. and >=5 mm. long, by prepng. a suspn. of liquid or solid segregation agent(s) in a homogeneous vitreous phase comprising mainly SiO2 and an alkali(ne earth) oxide in metastable equilibrium, decomposable into two phases of different compsn. in the presence of the segregation agent, drawing the suspn. to produce the elongated body while the temp. is kept at the upper limit of the metastable equilib. region and then cooling below the lowr limit fast enough to ensure decompsn. into the two phases. The body is then reheated to provoke continuous decompsn. and finally again reheated to crystallise the inner phase.
