Abstract

Sodium cyanate is prepd. by addn. of sodium alcoholite to alcoholic solution of urea at its b.pt. of 110-160 degrees C for 30 mins. Pref. alcohol is 2 ethoxyethanol (Bp. 135 degrees C). Prodict is free from carbonate or cyanide and obtd. in 98% yield. Reaction times are reduced from 8 hrs to 2 1/2 hrs. and alcohol required from 7 1./kg. cyanate to 3 1/2 1./kg.
