Abstract

Basic 17-azasteroids (I) or (Ia) (where R = oxo groups, /free or (for ketal-derivs.) (m)ethoxy-protected masked), H or free or 1-2C ester- or ether- protected OH; R1 = H, 1-4C (pref. (m)ethyl alkyl or CH2CH2OH; R2 = (pref. 1-2C) alkoxy) are used as intermediates for bactericides and bacteriostatics or for hypocholesterolaemic azasteroids. They are prepd. by reducing corresp. 16- or 20-oxo-steroids with Li(AlH4) or Na-bis-(2-methoxyethoxy) aluminium hydride in dioxan or benzene in an N2 atmosphere. Steroid is pref. e.g. 3 beta-hydroxy-17-aza-5 alpha-androstane.
